Gen Z and Jesus

This is the best review of Third Coast (our local church) this year, hands down:

“I’m an atheist, but I like the whole vibe you guys have going on here.” -Gen Z Visitor

I love Gen Z! Young people can seem scary at first to those of us who no longer see ourselves as young, but folks between the ages of 13 and 18 are just fantastic. They are more open to spiritual discussions and experiences than any other generation in the last 100 years, and boy are they honest!

About 15 years ago, when I was a young lad in undergrad, I remember faith leaders mourning the onset of postmodern philosophy and values in our culture… How dare we question liturgy, theology, and scriptural interpretation for ourselves? How dare we put the other before some disembodied definition of truth decided by somebody else somewhere else? This generation is proving to me that a postmodern mindset, when tuned into the power and leadership of the Holy Spirit, is a beautiful thing. If anything, it’s more Eastern in its relational processing of the world and closer to Biblical social norms at the root of our faith than we’ve come to admit to ourselves. Gen Z may not be interested in the Christian institutions and traditions of the established western Church, but they are curious about Jesus and deeply interested in your personal faith story. They may not agree with you, but they aren’t afraid to ask big questions and they are open to respectful discourse and authentic answers. If God is indeed real, they want to personally experience a relationship with Him.

It has never been easier in America to share our personal experience with Jesus… The only key is that we keep experiencing Jesus personally and get used to talking about it. They don’t want to hear from Pastor So-And-Do, or read some book about it. They want to hear from YOU what you have experienced and found to be true. If the next generation is looking for a genuine connection with the God of the universe, let’s invite them into an authentic relationship and introduce them to the true person of our loving Savior, Jesus.
